前年,我和蒋瑞同志为刁光覃、朱琳夫妇编一本论表演艺术的集子,面对刁老的文章著述,回想起他在舞台上塑造的一个个慑人心魄的艺术形象,感到刁光覃是一位非同一般的表演艺术家。研究他的表演艺术,或许能为我国话剧的表演理论开拓出一片可耕的土壤。看过刁光覃演戏的人都会突出地感到,他创造的人物形象生动、个性鲜明,有着强烈的艺术魅力。他所创造的角色都体现了他本人的艺术个性,但一个个人物形象又截然不同。诸如《带枪的人》中的列宁、《明朗的天》中的凌士湘、《双婚记》中的老矿工、《李国瑞》中的李国瑞,无论是领袖、知识分子,还是战士,都能很好地把握人物的外部形象和内在气质。《蔡文姬》中的曹操和《胆剑篇》中的越王勾践,虽同是历史人物,又同是政治家,但两个角色毫不雷同。无论是他的创作方法和所取得的成就,确有独到过人之处。如果说于是之在质朴无华、含蓄隽永方面具有代表性,那么刁光覃则是在鲜明炽烈、情浓形美方面独树一帜。长期以来,北京人艺在总导演焦菊隐先生
