The kimberlite formation is complex, with the addition of minerals that crystallize directly from the melt, as well as minerals that have been captured at different depths of the mantle and crust. For the time being, although reliable criteria for distinguishing between these two types of minerals can not be developed, the presence of banded garnets in many kimberlites proved convincingly that they were crystallized from the kimberlite melt. Because of similarities in composition and other properties of kerogen minerals to their deep-sea minerals, it is speculated that their physico-chemical conditions are similar.
