公元1771年,被流放到新疆的大学士纪晓岚接到一道圣旨,要求他在当地选择一块驻军所在地。于是纪晓岚对乌鲁木齐周边各县进行了勘察,在吉木萨尔的城郊,他意外地发现了一座已经废弃的古城,当地人称之为“护堡子破城子”。他根据遗址中发现的大量烟灰,推测这座古城可能毁于战火。查遍史料及在古城中发现的遗迹,纪晓岚认为,这座古城就是史料记载中早已湮没的北庭都护府。在《阅微草堂笔记》
