In recent years, many studies have found that mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have the ability to chemotactic to tumor sites and directly or indirectly promote the proliferation, invasion and metastasis of tumor cells. However, these tumor-specific features of MSC still need to be verified It is even possible to develop the opposite effect on tumor cells. MSCs are also antagonistic to tumor cells: on the one hand, MSCs can promote tumor development by regulating immune surveillance, tumor cell growth and angiogenesis; on the other hand, MSCs can inhibit the growth of tumor cells by inhibiting the signal pathway. At the same time, MSC is also considered to be an ideal gene therapy vector because of its characteristics of “homing” and secreting cytokines to the tumor site. This article reviews recent studies on the relationship between MSC and tumors.
