胡适是五四白话文运动的倡导者与实践者。由于白话文是新生事物,当时社会上对此的反对异常激烈,反对白话文运动的有大学者吴宓、黄侃、林纾、梅光迪、章士钊等人,尤以黄侃为最。黄侃乃国学大师章太炎的大弟子,恃才傲物。黄侃年轻时曾拜访大学者王闿运,王对黄侃的诗文激赏有加,不禁夸赞道:“你年方弱冠就已文采斐然,我儿子与你年纪相当,却还一窍不通,真是钝犬啊。”黄侃听罢美言,竟道:“你老先生尚且不通,更何况你的儿子。”好在王闿运通脱,并未计较。
