那是20年前的一个初夏,我第一次到西天目山。车停在山脚禅源寺,这里群山环抱,古木参天,环境十分幽静。西天目山素有“大树华盖闻九洲”之美称,而大树中数量最多,也最负盛名的就是柳杉了。柳杉属裸子植物杉科,是一种常绿乔木。柳杉叶螺旋状着生,呈5行排列,钻形,两侧扁,雌雄同株,是一种经受了冰川考验而幸存下来的孑遗植物。在我国除天目山外,柳杉还分布于福建北部和江西庐山。在西天目山,胸径2米以上的大柳杉有19株,1米以上的有1300株。其中最大的柳杉胸径2.23米,材积71立方米。如此大的柳杉群落在国内少有,在世界上也属罕见。出禅源寺山门便是莽莽的柳杉林海。这里约有上百株巨大的柳杉树,它们整齐而挺拔的耸立在山脚下。
