该著聚焦于奥古斯丁的心灵学说,考察他对恶的定义如何适用于作为实体的心灵。在奥古斯丁看来,善好与存在等同,所有善好之物也就是任何存在者都具备这样三个规定:凡所有存在的,都必然是一个东西,都必然是这个或那个东西,都必然具备某种秩序,也就是统一性、形式与秩序这组三一规定。一切心灵中的恶都必然满足心灵的三一式规定的缺失这一条件。三一式规定的缺失之间有紧密因果联系,心灵中的恶首先表现为心灵之秩序的缺失,而一切心灵秩序的缺失都源于心灵之统一性或者形式的缺失。
