一相对于摩天大楼和酒绿灯红的商业和娱乐场所这种暴露性而言,上海人的日常家居生活是一个更加隐晦和深藏不露的部分。外部形态的庞大和繁华,实际上更多的是针对公共生活的实用性的,或在满足外地观光客的视觉欲望的时候,才显出其存在的意义。而对于真正的上海人来说,自己的家却更为重要。上海的这个深藏不露的部分,一般并不轻易示人。懂得上海人性格的人们应该知道.上海人的家居生活有两个十分重要的特征:一是上海人很少会把客人请回家;二是上海人居住的地方从外表看灰头土脸,毫不起眼,室内布置却往往极为整洁舒适,甚至富丽堂皇。室内空间才是上海人家和上海城市性格的内在秘密的孳生地。
