交通信号机使用发光二极管,具有寿命长,耗电省等优点。将 LED 应用于交通信号机,红、黄、绿三色的亮度必须分别超过1cd。目前红、黄两色的 LED 已达到此要求,有待开发的是绿色 LED。去年10月日本东芝公司已报道开发了高亮度绿色 LED。其波长是566.2nm,亮度高达0.8cd,驱动电压约为2.2V,工作电流为20mA。过去的绿色 LED 亮度为100mcd,使用材料为 GaP。而这次使用的是 InGaAlP,与红色半导体激光器材料相同。据东芝研究开发中心
