莫泊桑是法国著名的批判现实主义作家,一生写了近300篇短篇小说和6部长篇小说。他的小说形象地揭示了资产阶级虚伪、自私的反动本质,被誉为世界短篇小说大师。莫泊桑13岁那年考入里昂中学,他的老师布耶是当时著名的巴那斯派诗人。布耶发现莫泊桑颇有文学才能,就把他介绍给福楼拜。福楼拜是世界闻名的作家,当时在法国享有崇高的声誉。他看了看莫泊桑的作品,冷冷地说：“孩子,我不知道你有没有才气。在你带给我的东西里表明你有某些聪明。但是,你永远不要忘记,照布封(法国作家)的说法,才气就是坚持不懈,你得好好努力呀!”莫泊桑点点头,把福楼拜的话牢牢记在心里。福楼拜想考一考莫泊桑的观察能力和语言功底。一天,福楼拜带莫泊桑去看一家杂货铺,回来后要他写一篇文章,要求所写的货物必须是杂货铺的货物,所写的事物只能用一个名词来称呼,所写的动作只能用一个动词来表达,
