In 1983, Thomas Wayne Simmons cameto Jinan for the first time and was em-plo y ed a s an Engli s h t eac he r at theShandong Institute of Architectural Engineer-ing (SIAE), where he lived and taught forthree years before returning to the UnitedStates. However, he missed China so muchthat he returned in 2001 and, through therecommendation of a friend of his, came toShandong Jiaotong College (SJC) to be em-ployed once more as an English teacher.
