1965年,天津市文物管理处试掘了蓟县张家园遗址,将该遗址的第③、④文化层均归属为夏家店下层文化系统,同时又注意到两层之间有着一定差别。1977年秋、1979年春天津市文物管理处考古队对蓟县围坊遗址的发掘,首次将围坊三期文化作为一个新文化类型公诸于学术界。1984年发表的张家园第二次发掘报告说明1965年试掘的第③层等单位也应划归围坊三期文化。
In 1965, the Tianjin Cultural Relics Management Office tried and explored the Zhangjiayuan Site in Jixian, and classified the third and the fourth cultural sites of the site as the lower Xiajiadian cultural system. At the same time, it noticed that there was a certain difference between the two levels. In the autumn of 1977 and the spring of 1979, the excavation of the ruins of the Fenfang ruins in Jixian County by the Archeological Team of the Tianjin Cultural Relics Management Office made it the first time that the Fenghuang Phase III culture was published in the academic community as a new type of culture. The second excavation report released by Zhangjiayuan in 1984 shows that the third floor of the trial excavation in 1965 and other units should also be assigned to the third phase of the Fenfang Culture.
