２０年前因“投机倒把”被迫辞职的张长顺，从个体摊贩一直做到饭店老板。生意红火了，但他心里却总找不到感觉。直到一个偶然的机会，他承包了厂里的食堂——又回到了厂里，这才仿佛找到了个人的价值。 市场经济解放了生产力，改革开放给张长顺代来了创业的机会，他是一个成功者。然而他却没有成功的喜悦，反而有一种无奈选择的感觉。 由此看来，改革不但要改革经济体制，改革旧的传统观念同样重要。精神上的自由和解放，与物质的富足同等重要。
