To study the scavenging effect of lung cells, the authors inhaled ascitic dust (about 40 mg / m3) for 5 hours. After stimulation by the dust, the monocytes migrated from the blood to the alveolar spaces and became phagocytes. Phagocytic cell activity was examined using three criteria: (1) phagocytic rate (as a percentage of eluted cells); (2) phagocytic index; and (3) phagocytic capacity, expressed as the product of phagocytic rate and the number of ultramarine particles. The authors concluded that the ability of lung cells to clear dust after inhalation is affected by the following four factors: (1) the migration of monocytes into the alveolar space; (2) the phagocytosis involved in phagocytosis
