邓小平晚年,主要指他1989年11月经中央同意退休后的这段时间。退休之后,正如他自己所表示的,将继续忠于党和国家的事业。他在晚年仍然心系党和国家的前途,思考改革开放和现代化建设中出现的新情况和新问题。这不但系统地表现在1992年他视察南方时那个关系到全局性问题的重要讲话中,而且也表现在这前后对许多重大现实问题的关注上。现仅就后者,作一些探析。要理直气壮地坚持四项基本原则
