绿盘岩化作用(Propylitization)自1868年V·李希霍芳为之命名以来,至1880年之间,Zirkel、Beeker诸人对之均曾论及.其所称绿盘岩即指安山岩遭受热水变质而产生出绿泥石、绿帘石、方解石等矿物之谓.其后日本的加藤武夫在上述变质之外又注意到斜长石的钠长水化以至碱性长石化,而以钠销长石化为绿盘岩化作用的根本条件.但在其他国家中赞成这一说法与不赞成这一说法的各有一部分人,以致定义出现紊乱.同时把沸石化作用也逐渐归入绿金岩化里面来了.关于绿盘岩化作用与矿化作用之间的关系,人们的认识也不一致,自美国认为二者系同一作用以后,欧亚学者之间认为绿盘岩属于安山岩的岩浆喷出后经自变质作用(autometamorphism)或岩浆期后蚀变作用(deutericalteration)形成的说法较占优势.
