他是我国核武器研制和国防科技工作的主要组组者之一,从1955年我国决定发展原子能事业起,40多年来一直在核技术领域担任领导工作,先后参与领导了我国原子弹、氢弹、中子弹以及同近程、中程、远程、洲际导弹相配套的几乎所有核弹头的研制工作,为铸造我国强大的核反击力量,为国防尖端科技事业的创立和发展,建树了不朽的功勋。他敏锐跟踪国际核武器发展前沿,先后组织、领导了原子弹小型化、武器化和氢弹的研制工作,并成功组织了核试验从地上到地下的转变,为打破核大国的垄断和禁试阴谋、增强我国的综合国力做出了卓越的贡献。从1945年出国考察原子弹算起,他已与原子弹打了半个多世纪的交道,结下了不解的情缘。如今,他仍清醒地认为,在新形势下核力量的战略地位没有改变,战略核武器仍是大国实力与地位的象征,和平不是乞求得来的,而是在力量的抗衡中取得的。为此,年近八旬的他仍继续在国防高科技战线上辛勘地耕耘着……
