二十世纪以来,特别是近半个世纪以来,由于各种社会原因,美国英语(AmE)和英国英语(BrE)在语音、语法和词汇三个方面,各自经历了不同的发展过程,出现一些差异:读法不同,用法不一,叫法各异。其中差异最大的在于词汇方面,同一个词有时在美国英语和英国英语中的意义不同。例如,vest 在美国英语中指西服背心(英国英语则叫waist-coat),而在英国英语中vest 一词指汗衫(美国英语则叫undershirt)。这种区别遍及生活的各个领域,特别是与衣、食、住、行有关的词。若不了解这些差异,往往就会给我国学生在学习英语时带来一定的困难。
Since the 20th century, especially in the past half century, due to various social reasons, American English (AmE) and British English (BrE) have experienced different development processes in terms of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Differences: Different reading methods, different usages, and different names. The biggest difference lies in the vocabulary. The same word sometimes has different meanings in American English and British English. For example, vest in United States English refers to a suit vest (was-coat in British English), while in English English vesty refers to a shirt (United States English is called undershirt). This distinction covers all areas of life, especially the words related to clothing, food, housing, and transportation. If you do not understand these differences, it will often give our students some difficulties in learning English.
