Cotton is the largest pillar industry in Xinjiang. In 2007, cotton planting area in Xinjiang reached nearly 1.2 million hm2. Planting cotton has become the main way for peasants of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang to get rid of poverty and get well-to-do.
