世界闻名的虎丘塔在苏州市西北7公里处,高高耸立于景色幽雅的虎丘山巅,是苏州现存的最古老的一座塔。由于风格与同一时期建的杭州雷峰塔相似,被誉为江南二古塔。虎丘塔又称云岩寺塔。该塔始建于五代周显德六年(959年),建成于北宋建隆二年(961年)。据记载,隋文帝就曾在此建塔,但那是座木塔,现虎丘塔即在木塔原址上建筑的。塔高7层,塔身平面呈八角形,是一座砖身木檐仿楼阁形宝塔。由于从宋代到清末曾遭到多次火灾,因而顶部和木檐都遭到了毁坏,原来的高度已无法知道。据有关专家调查,虎丘塔在明崇祯十一
