祠,是古代祭祠祈求的场所。《诗经·小雅·天保》便有“(礻龠)祠蒸尝”。所以。《周礼》的《春官·小宗伯》有注:“求福曰祷,得求曰祠”。可知,祠的建立,与祭祖有关。至今各地的宗祠及其派生的支祠仍有遗迹。如“陇西李氏宗祠”,“陇西李氏莲峰支祠”之类。在农村一姓聚居的村庄,还有祠在,俗称“祠堂”,“支祠”。这与《汉书·张安世传》所述:“赐茔杜东,将作穿复土,起冢祠堂,”的祭祀祖宗先人或贤能的庙堂一致。
