2007年一张《Year Zero》的特殊性并不仅仅在于它是一张末世概念专辑,也不仅仅在于在这张专辑当中Trent Reznor将噪音之凶恶和旋律之优美结合得堪称完美,更重要的是自这张专辑制作伊始便牵引了创作者和聆听者两方的那个被称为Year Zero的Alternate Reality Game(以下简称ARG,国内将其译为“虚拟实境”游戏)。
