电影传入中国后,在上海滩上风生水起,成为市民一种娱乐消遣的时尚。然而,近在咫尺的苏州却迟迟没有一座正规的电影院。民国十六年(1927年)秋季起,徐碧波、程小青、叶天魂在苏州五卅路公园内东斋对面,自建房屋,自备发电机,开设了苏州第一座正规的电影院——公园电影院。开院之日,放映“大中华公司”摄制的《同居之爱》,并请来该片主演韩云珍到场剪彩,轰动一时。创办者徐碧波后来编写过电影剧本,并成为民国后期沪上著名的小说家之一。
