玉门因石油闻名,西晋张华编修《博物志》以来,文献多有记载或引录,《甘肃通志》等误为范晔《后汉书·博物记》。经对比研究发现,多种单行本、丛书本的《玉门县志》不是清抄本或道光六年抄本,就是其影印本。清抄本和道光六年抄本的区别仅是抄写的不同而已,两个抄本或都来源于同一底本,或道光六年本抄自不能确定具体时间的清抄本。《玉门县志》的编成时间,最早当在嘉庆九年之后,最晚当在道光六年之前,是以《重修肃州新志》为主,并参考《甘肃通志》重新编修而成,有的内容系直接抄录,有的进行了修正删改。《玉门市志》是在新时期编纂的玉门历史上第一部系统、全面而又特色鲜明的志书,充分体现玉门的地域与物产特色,但在编纂时参考了旧志,未能核对原始文献,沿袭了旧志中的有些错误。
