On October 1, 1990, John Stewart Bell died suddenly of stroke and was 62 years old. His death was an irreparable loss to the development of physics and natural philosophy. For not only did he make the most profound contribution to his generation of basic research in quantum mechanics, but he continued to explore new ideas on the subject until the very last moment of his life. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Bell was the first of his family to have completed higher education. He received his Bachelor of Science in Experimental Physics (1948) and Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Physics (1949) at Queen’s University in Belfast.
