Ethyl methyl-diesel fuel was used on a Euro III Euro diesel engine to study its effects on total particulate matter (PM) emissions, soluble organic compounds (SOF), dry soot (DS) and sulfate in particulate matter. In order to investigate the effect of oxygenated fuel on soot formation process, a high speed CCD camera was used to visualize the combustion process. The results show that oxygenated fuel can greatly reduce the emission of Euro Ⅲ diesel engine particulates. The emission of DS decreases greatly while the emission of SOF increases at a small load and the sulfate emission slightly increases. After ethanol was added into the diesel fuel, the ignition delay period became longer and the duration of combustion shortened. The flame brightness of the mixed fuel decreased, indicating that oxygenated fuel suppressed the generation of soot.
