The title compound was first isolated in 1971 by Carlson et al., Identified and synthesized, with the sexual attraction to house flies. The synthesis was confirmed by a Wittig reaction to be a mixture of 85% (Z) and 15% (E) isomers by Wittig reaction. The sex pheromone and (Z) isoforms were found to be more potent than (E) for this house fly sex pheromone.
