The operation of this speed change mechanism is described as follows: Two friction discs with equal radius r (called the friction plates in the original figure) 1 and 3 rotate together with A and D shafts respectively. Two hemispherical surfaces 2 of equal radius are coupled to and rotate about axes OB, OC. The two hemispherical crank handles 6, 7 are free to rotate about their pins C, B.
