借用“cruel”一词指中国当代油画描绘社会某些残酷的、残忍的、使人痛苦的、无情的、严酷的行为的作品。在反审美反精英的艺术思潮的影响下,艺术家寻求一种有别于主流文化的审美趣味,这类题材所反映出来的冷漠快感以及强烈视觉冲击的艺术魅力必然引起受众对社会矛盾、生与死、人性与良知等问题的讨论。
