The euro has become the currency of 302 million inhabitants of the 12 euro-zone countries. The euro area is the largest trading partner in the world economy, accounting for 19% of the total world trade. At the beginning of 2002, the euro currency was successfully launched with a very smooth release. In the first week of 2002, 75% of the cash transactions in the euro area were conducted through a unified and brand new euro. The euro is the second largest currency in the world. Thirteen percent of the world’s foreign exchange reserves exist in euros and more than 50 countries stabilize their currency exchange rates by linking to the euro. Since the birth of the euro in early 1999, 25% of the money market instruments have been priced in euros.
