Over a long period of time, while engaged in popular literature and children’s literature, I also like to study local history. I published in newspapers and magazines nearly a thousand articles in Shanghai, and published a collection of “old news”, “Shanghai anecdote” and other collections. One of the important reasons I have been able to write these anecdotes is that I am more concerned with the collection and use of inscriptions. Inscriptions are not as documentary literature available as a directory, nor as reference books can be a centralized access, so search up very laborious. However, many inscriptions often fill the shortcomings of written materials. In 1985, it was the 580th anniversary of Zheng He’s departure from the West. An editor at the Xinmin Evening supplement told me: “It is said that during the Ming dynasty, a primitive lighthouse called ’Baoshan’ was erected near the Changjiang Estuary, which led Zheng He’s fleet to and from the Yangtze River. An article on ’Baoshan’. ”Accepting the appointment, I took the time to inspect a large number of historical records, only to see the Ming Dynasty Wang Shi
