In the novel A Clockwork Orange, the author creates a new language, Nadsat, a hybrid of Russian, English and gypsy talk. This paper, from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis, is intended to explore the importance of the use of Nadsat in characterization. Studies also show that Nadsat has three typical language features: re-lexicalization, pronominalization and grammaticalness. It is hoped that by analyzing the use of Nadsat in A Clockwork Orange, readers can better understand and appreciate the importance of diction in literature.
