Brief History In June 1940, in response to the German Army’s threat to U.S. security on the European battlefield, the U.S. War Department began planning to mass-produce all its weapons early. In August 1940, Lieutenant-General William Nathan, head of the Production Management Office, asked Keller, the general manager of Crews, to build a tank factory by September 1941 and build 1,000 tanks for the Army by August 1942 . Shortly afterwards, Keller submitted a detailed plan to build a tank factory to Major General Weissole, the army’s ordnance minister, and outlined the production process at the plant. The tank factory was soon built near Detroit and became known as the Detroit Arsenal Tank Plant (DATP). In April 1941, the factory built the first M3 tank before it was completed
