INTRODUCTION The quality of holes machined with twist drills depends on many factors and can usually be summarized in four main areas, namely the machine tool, the workpiece, the cutting process and the tool. Factors influencing the tooling include the geometry of the twist drill tip, the dynamic and static stiffness, the surface finish, the overall profile of the tool material and the drill bit, in particular the profile shape of the cross section. Cutting forces and cutting temperatures form the main influencing factors associated with the drilling process, while workpiece materials, workpiece geometry and fixtures form the main influencing factors for the workpiece. A similar analysis can be used to deal with it
