油茶是我国南方主要的木本油料,栽培历史悠久,量大面广,种子含油率20—35%,茶油是一种很好的食用油,亦是医药和工业的重要原料。油茶还有许多副产品,可以综合利用。我国历来茶油产量占居世界第一位,在对外贸易上也占有重要地位。油茶具有适应性强,寿命长,花工少,收益大的特点。适于山地栽培,不与粮棉争地,又可以绿化荒山,保持水土,因此发展油茶生产对社会主义建设和备战、备荒都有着重大意
