1993年底,暨南大学科研简报总第45期刊登了一则引人关注的消息:该校的苏运霖教授在一年之内,获得了五项荣誉:被美国纽约科学院选定并邀请为该院院士(该科学院是1817年成立的国际性科学组织,本世纪共有40多位诺贝尔奖金获得者成为该院院士);被第六届中国电工学会选为“全国电工学会优秀科技工作者”;被第五后中国电机工程学会选为“电机工程优秀科技工作者”;被录入美国国际传记中心1993年冬出版的“国际传记辞典”;被列入英国传记研究所1994年出版的“国际卓越领导者名单”。
