Arauco’s acquisition of Flakeboard Inc. is the largest advance in the North American wood-based panel industry in recent years. Stephen Powney talks about the benefits of the move and his thoughts on the future of the industry. Flakeboard has been synonymous with innovation and leadership in the North American panel industry for decades. In its more than 50-year history of man-made board manufacturing, it has achieved number one in the industry, including the first continuous sheet-metal production line in North America (1972) and the first particleboard producer in North America using continuous-press technology (1985 ). Six bold acquisitions of Weyerhaeuser in 2006 doubled its capacity and became the largest composite sheet producer in North America at the time. Its products include HDF, MDF, particle board, melamine finishes (TFL), as well as coatings and laminates.
