1992年我曾写过一篇长文论述张宇的创作,将他的写作分为四个阶段,大约是乡土生活小说(70—80年代前期)、政治——文化小说(1985年前后)、乡土回忆小说(80年代后期)及心理——存在小说(90年代),各期分别列出了代表作,从作品出发对张宇的深层创作精神以及小说带出的文化意蕴做了较为详致的探讨。全文3万字,似是写尽了对这位作家的认识。所以后来,在他又推出新长篇《疼痛与抚摸》(1995年)、中篇《老房子》(1998年)、更新长篇《软弱》
