Lead is known to affect delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD). The usual method is to measure the enzyme activity to evaluate lead exposure. The authors used immunospectrophotometry to directly measure the amount of enzyme in the blood and compared it with other indicators, suggesting the mechanism of ALAD-induced changes in lead poisoning. Thirty lead-free exposure controls and lead exposure workers from 40 battery factories were surveyed. The results are shown in Table 1.
