Recently, a randomized study published in the journal Liver Diseases found that immunosuppressive therapy may not be needed in asymptomatic patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Jordan J. Feld, MD, of the University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and colleagues report that although there is known evidence of the natural course of AIH, little is known about the treatment of asymptomatic patients. Therefore, it is unclear whether these patients need immunosuppressive therapy to reduce their associated complications. The researchers conducted a liver histology, response assessment, and survival survey to a group of patients from the same treatment center. Based on the revised criteria of the International Autoimmune Hepatitis Panel, all patients with clinically diagnosed AIH assessment. The results showed that in 124 patients, 25% of the patients (31) present no symptoms, and serum aminotransferases, bilirubin and immunoglobulin G baseline levels were lower than the symptomatic patients.
