由于政府的支持,中国大陆医疗卫生事业发展很快,医学科学水平不断提高。截至一九八三年底,全国医院病床已达到二百一十一万张,全国专业卫生技术人员共有三百二十五万二千八百人,比一九四九年增加了五点四倍,高级西医师五十五万七千五百三十五人,比一九四九年增加了十三点七倍,卫生机构十九万三千四百三十八所,比一九四九年增加了五十一点七倍。
