凹凸棒石粘土是一种极有价值的非金属矿产资源。因其具有独特的物理、化学性能,在国际上称为特种粘土。我国是70年代中期才发现这种矿物的,主要分布在苏、皖交界的六合、盱眙、嘉山及天长一带。盱眙凹凸棒石矿床具有品位高、储量大、分布广、矿层稳定、埋藏浅适于露天开采的特点。近年来,进行了初步的开发应用研究。使用盱眙凹凸棒石粘土产品的用户已达400余家。1987年销售量达3500吨。盱眙凹凸棒石粘土产品广泛用于各个工业部门。市场总需求量约2万吨,它基本上代表了目前国内凹凸棒石粘土矿的开发、应用水平。
