太湖石,又名湖石,因太湖盛产而得名。但是,湖石并不是太湖所绝无仅有的,只要是石灰岩地区,在荒古年代有适合的水体环境,都可以在波蚀浪涤下形成湖石。我国的园林“以叠石胜”,用湖石垒池叠山,美化庭院,千姿百态;特别是整座孤峰立石,亭亭玉立,更是湖石珍品。自宋代“花石纲”之后,湖石更是闻名天下,而今上海的玉玲珑,苏州的瑞云峰、冠云峰,杭州的皱云峰,北京的青芝岫,都是湖石立
