Many parts of Kentucky are from flat to moderately inclined mineral ruins and, if properly managed, have great potential for use as grazing land or hay production sites. In 1976, studies began to determine the yield and quality of several fodder crops grown under two such soil habitats (one in eastern Kentucky and the other in western Kentucky). This eastern part of Breathitt County is the site of mineral ruins evolved from the strata of the county. Coal buried in this formation has been mined. The western one, located in Muhlenhezg County, is a mineral ruin evolved from the lower part of Iisman and the Upper Carbondale.
