Objective To investigate the curative effect of ganciclovir-based early intervention on infant hearing loss caused by cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection. Methods Listening brainstem evoked potential (ABR) was used to screen and evaluate hearing of infants with CMV infection. Sixteen children with hearing impairment were treated with ganciclovir antiviral, nutritional brain cells and auditory stimulation. Results Brainstem auditory evoked potentials were reviewed 3 to 6 months after the end of treatment. Twelve cases (75%) were cured, 2 cases (12.5%) were effective and 2 cases (12.5%) were ineffective. The total effective rate was 87.5%. Conclusions Ganciclovir-based comprehensive early intervention is satisfactory, safe and clinically worthwhile for the treatment of infant hearing impairment caused by CMV infection.
