The study of the effect of friction in a piston internal combustion engine on the lateral movement of a piston can in fact only be carried out in a greatly simplified manner using simulation calculations. The calculation program developed by the Institute of Internal Combustion Engines and Motor Vehicles at the University of Stuttgart takes into account the five frictional areas of the piston movement and uses it to determine the degree of influence of each friction zone on the piston lateral movement. The calculation shows that the friction between the piston pin and the pin seat and the friction between the piston ring and the piston in the piston ring groove have the greatest influence on the piston lateral movement. In particular, the top dead zone has a significant effect on the Anlagewechsel transformation and has the opposite effect.
