江阴临港新城为省级经济开发区,2005年8月,市委、市政府出台了《关于加快建设临港新城的实施意见》,提出了打造临港新城的奋斗目标。江阴临港新城包括江阴西部沿江夏港、申港、利港、璜土四个镇和港口、石庄两个办事处,总计行政区划面积188平方公里,人口约20万人。临港新城建设的总体目标是:根据“以港兴城、港以城兴、港城共荣、互动发展”的指导思想,确立建设“前景广阔、辐射周边的新港区;充满活力、功能完善的新商务区;产业集聚、特色明显的新产业
