This paper examines the debate on Chinese terminology for DSITANCE EDUCATION. It argues that Chinese term “YUANCHENG JIAOYU” is going to replace original one “YUANJULI JIAOYU” as the formal terminology translated from English words “DISTANCE EDUCATION”.The paper has shown that either distance education in English,or yuancheng jiaoyu (yuanjuli jiaoyu originally) in Chinese is ageneric term that includes the range of teaching/learning strargies variously from correspondence education, to multi-media teaching at a distance, and to tele-education.It is a new family of education distinguished from face-to-face teaching and campus and classroom based education. The paper has pointed out that DISTANCE EDUCATION is translated as “YAOJU JIAOYU” in Hong Kong and as “GEKONG JIAOYU” in Taiwan but not as “YUANCHENG JIAOYU” in both areas. It was in Chinese mainland that the term“ YUANCHENG JIAOYU” began to he used in 1996 by Tsinghua University, and has been widely accepted by higher education community (institutions and academics),Chinese government (including Ministry of Education), and mass media in the recent years. Moreover, the paper has convincibly shown that this terminology shift is reasonable and feasible. It has been made by referring to various studies based on the meaning and origin of words and phrase (semantics and etymology), aesthetics, linguistics, and comparative philology etc.The Author of the paper has suggested that further studies are needed to analyze the relationships between concepts of distance education, tele-education and open learning. It will be done by the author in other essays elsewhere.
