Engineers at ATT’s Bell Labs recently confirmed the feasibility of transmitting lightwaves over the oceans without using expensive conventional electronic regenerator systems. “This means we can increase the capacity and flexibility of the subsea system and at the same time simplify the design of the regenerator,” said Neil Bergano, ATT Bell Labs Underwater Systems Laboratory.
