However, there is still a lack of research on how to construct academic status of doctoral students in social sciences during their writing of second language essay. This paper mainly uses multiple case studies and in-depth interviews with research methods to explore how a group of Chinese social science doctoral students can fill their vacancies in the process of drafting, revising and finalizing the discussion and conclusion chapters. The study found that the construction process of these students’ academic status presents an indefinite dynamic character. Gradually, they change from being original novices in academic writing to more skilled writers. The findings of this study provide important implications for the teaching of second language writing in China.
